Organic Hojicha

ほうじ茶

We looked to Kagoshima on our search for this tea, not only for its subtropical climate and fertile gardens, but also because of its reputation as a region for producing great organic tea in Japan. Our Hojicha is made using a blend of stems of tea leaves from three organic gardens, which have been flash roasted to create a mellow, soothing drink. The roasting removes any bitterness and astringency normally associated with green tea, making way for a syrupy caramel sweetness and warming umami in the taste. A soothing drink, traditionally considered to be gentle on the stomach and support digestion. Check out the Deep Dive into Hojicha on our Journal for more information.

  • Cultivar - A blend, primarily of Yabukita and Samedori
  • Picked - Spring/Summer 2020

    Cold weather warmer

Love this tea in winter or straight after sea swimming at any time of year. Wonderfully aromatic and comforting. Good cold brewed in summer too - roasting reduces bitterness so you can be less fussy about timing. The roasting process also makes it low caffeine so I like it as an alternative to an after dinner coffee

    Excellent Tea!

We recently purchased 100g of the Hojicha and we love it! Wonderful caramel tones with great depth of flavour, I will be back for some of this for sure.

    Aromatic and warming

I find the taste too strong and think it might be more suitable in the winter

    Roasted Green Tea

This is a highly roasted Green Tea with quite a distinct flavour - there is a Winter/Autumnal Bonfire Caramelised taste to it, unlike other green teas due to the way it has been processed. It is great on a rainy evening with a good book or film and I find it very comforting.

    Disappointed

I love green tea and have been drinking it for years. I thought I would try something different - I should have stuck to what I know. The aroma was horrid and I could only drink two sips. Truly gutted BUT not every tea can be a winner right!

    Hi Megsy,

We're sorry to hear Hojicha wasn't for you - it's certainly very different to other green teas. That's because it's been heavily roasted during its processing which brings out very different flavours. We usually recommend Hojicha if you like coffee or strong roasted flavours. If you still want to explore more green teas, you might prefer Genmaicha which is green tea blended with toasted rice kernels, which lend a popcorn warmth to the more familiar grassy umami green tea flavours or even Ali Shan, which is an oolong tea - but at the green end of the spectrum. It'll be thicker and have more fruits sweetness than green tea but still a refreshing character with some grassy notes.

Hope these help - feel free to chat to us any time at customerservice@jingtea.com if you ever want any other recommendations.

    Felicity, JING Customer Service.

    Satisfying and comforting

A beautiful tea, I love the depth of flavour from toasting. There's a very satisfying mouthfeel to it and the caramel notes are comforting on a rainy day.
